Tax Accountant Job Description

Overview:
The Tax Accountant will play a key role in providing tax preparation, advisory services, and ensuring compliance with tax regulations at the federal, state, and local levels. This role requires a deep understanding of tax laws, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work in a dynamic environment, especially during tax season.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and file federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, and other business entities in the Grand Rapids area.
- Analyze financial data, reports, and documentation to ensure accurate tax filings.
- Conduct tax research to ensure compliance with the latest tax laws and regulations.
- Advise clients on tax planning strategies to optimize tax savings and reduce liabilities.
- Ensure timely filing of tax returns and compliance with all relevant tax laws and regulations.
- Act as a liaison with the IRS and state tax authorities on behalf of clients for audits, notices, or inquiries.
- Maintain secure and organized client records and financial documents.
- Collaborate with team members and other departments for accurate financial reporting and compliance.
- Assist in the preparation and filing of amended returns or responding to tax-related notices.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required).
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or progress toward CPA designation (preferred but not required).
- 2-4 years of tax accounting experience, preferably within a public accounting firm.
- Expertise with tax preparation software and general accounting tools (e.g., QuickBooks, ProConnect, etc.).
- In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations, particularly within the state of Michigan.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to identify discrepancies and correct them.
- Excellent client-facing skills with strong written and verbal communication.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines, especially during peak tax periods.
